If you are thinking about starting therapy, you probably have lots of questions. Here are the ones I get asked most often. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please don’t hesitate to get in touch — I’m always happy to chat.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If you are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, or just not quite yourself — therapy could help. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling. Many people come to therapy simply because they want to understand themselves better or feel more in control of their lives.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. I will ask you a little about what has brought you to therapy and what you are hoping to get from it. There is no pressure — you don’t have to share anything you are not ready for. It is also a chance for you to ask me any questions you may have.
How long will I need therapy?
This is different for everyone. Some people feel significantly better after just a few sessions. Others prefer longer term support. We will review your progress regularly together and you are always in control of how long we work together.
Is online therapy as effective as in person?
Yes — research shows that online therapy is just as effective as face to face therapy for most issues. Many clients actually prefer it because it is more convenient, private and comfortable being in their own home.
What if I feel worse before I feel better?
This can sometimes happen — and it is completely normal. Therapy involves exploring difficult feelings and experiences, which can feel uncomfortable at first. This is a sign that the process is working. I will always support you through this at a pace that feels right for you.
How is counselling different from psychotherapy?
Counselling tends to focus on present issues and is usually shorter term. Psychotherapy goes deeper, exploring how past experiences shape how you feel today, and tends to be longer term. As an integrative therapist I blend both approaches depending on what you need.
Is everything I say confidential?
Yes — everything you share with me is completely confidential. The only exceptions are if I believe you or someone else is at serious risk of harm. I will always explain this fully in our first session.
How much does it cost and do you offer a free consultation?
Sessions are £90 for 50 minutes. I also offer a 10-minute free initial consultation so we can see if we are a good fit before you commit to anything. Please visit my Fees & Sessions page for full details.
