If the idea of sitting face-to-face in a therapy room feels uncomfortable or intimidating, you’re not alone. Many people find the traditional counselling setting a little formal — and that can actually get in the way of opening up.
Walk & Talk therapy offers something different.
What is Walk & Talk therapy?
Walk & Talk therapy is exactly what it sounds like — a counselling session that takes place outdoors, while walking side by side rather than sitting opposite each other. Sessions typically take place in a local park or green space, at a gentle, relaxed pace.
For many people, something about being outside and moving makes it easier to talk. The pressure of direct eye contact is removed, the fresh air helps you feel calmer, and the natural environment can make even difficult conversations feel a little more manageable.
What are the benefits?
Research suggests that spending time in nature reduces levels of cortisol — the body’s main stress hormone. Combined with the gentle physical activity of walking, this means you’re already in a calmer, more open state before the therapeutic work even begins.
Some of the benefits people report include:
- Feeling less anxious during sessions compared to a traditional room setting
- Finding it easier to talk about difficult topics
- Leaving sessions feeling physically as well as emotionally lighter
- A greater sense of connection with the therapeutic process
Who is it suitable for?
Walk & Talk therapy can work well for a wide range of people, but it tends to be particularly helpful for those who:
- Feel anxious or uncomfortable in enclosed spaces
- Find it hard to open up when sitting face-to-face
- Are dealing with stress, anxiety or low mood and find nature calming
- Simply prefer being outdoors to being inside
It is not suitable for everyone — if mobility is a concern, or if you are going through a particularly acute crisis, a more traditional setting may be more appropriate. We always discuss what will work best for you before beginning.
Where do sessions take place?
I offer Walk & Talk therapy sessions in the green spaces around West Hampstead and Queens Park in North West London — beautiful, peaceful areas that provide a calm and confidential setting for our work together.
Sessions are available whatever the season. A bit of fresh air and a warm coat can work wonders, even in winter.
How is confidentiality maintained outdoors?
This is one of the most common questions I get asked — and it’s a really good one. We walk routes that are quiet and away from crowds, and we keep our voices at a natural conversational level. In practice, the outdoor setting is just as confidential as a therapy room.
How do I get started?
If Walk & Talk therapy sounds like it might suit you, the first step is simply getting in touch for a free, no-obligation consultation. We’ll have a short chat to see if we’re a good fit, and I’ll answer any questions you have.
There’s no pressure and no commitment — just a chance to explore whether this could be right for you.
